LRC Computer Lab Rules

Lab Access

  • Use of ITSC facilities and equipment is limited to currently registered MTSU students and to current or retired MTSU faculty and staff.
  • Students must show a valid MTSU ID to use ITSC facilities and equipment.

Ethical and Considerate Use of the LRC Computer Labs

  • These facilities are to be used for academic purposes only. Recreational use (playing games, etc.) or use for personal business is not allowed.
  • Students must follow the MTSU IT Resource Policy in using these facilities. Click here for a copy of the document.
  • Only ITSC software may be used on ITSC computers.
  • Because the ITSC is a public facility, students must not display or download on a computer screen any materials that a reasonable individual might find offensive or harassing.
  • If you are using a computer application that has sound, ask the lab assistant or media library assistant for headphones so others in the lab are not disturbed. The lab assistants and media library assistants have the authority to ask students they feel are being disruptive or failing to follow ITSC rules to leave. Campus Security will be called if a student fails to comply with a request to leave.

Help

  • The lab assistants are there to help you when you have problems using software applications, but they cannot teach you the basics of those software applications. The Office of Information Technology (OIT) does offer student workshops on using Internet. Call their Help Desk at 5345 for more information. Also, several departments offer courses covering use of computer applications (e.g., SPSE 322, "Technology in Education").
  • Reference manuals and tutorials are available for some of the computer applications in the lab. They may be used only in the lab. You may sign-out these manuals/tutorials from the lab assistant. The lab assistant will keep your student ID until the manual/tutorial is returned.

Saving Your Work

  • Save your work frequently. If your computer crashes and you have not saved recently, you will lose your work.
  • Students must save their work on CDs, thumb/travel/USB drives or the Z: drive but not on computer hard drives. Computer hard drives are erased daily in all ITSC computer facilities.

Printing:

  • Only one copy of each document or download may be printed. Students may not print more than 20 pages TOTAL during each visit. Students who wish to print more than 20 pages must get permission from the lab worker or media library assistant.
  • If you send a file to the printer and it does not print, DO NOT KEEP SENDING THE FILE. Ask for assistance. Printing can be slow if multiple students are trying to print at the same time.
  • DO NOT LEAVE YOUR PRINTING UNTIL THE LAST MINUTE. Students must leave when the computer area they are using closes, even if they are not finished printing.
  • Neither transparencies nor thermo faxes may be printed
