The Mathematician’s Notebook is one key to a successful problem-based mathematics class. The Mathematicians’ Notebook is an adaptation of the Scientist’s Notebook that has been successfully used by science teachers. This program will demonstrate how to use these sources in the classroom, through specific images, lesson ideas and web links. {MTKT0910FA-08} Dual Credit Opportunities for High School Agricultural Students in Agribusiness/Finance [Dr. Cliff Rickets and Ms. Alanna L. Neely, School of Agribusiness and Agriscience, MTSU] MTSU is the first four-year University in the state to be included in a Perkins IV Reserve Fund Grant that allows high school students to take a Career Technical Education class for high school and college credit simultaneously. This program will highlight the success of the previous dual credit offering, as well as introduce the new offering: Agribusiness: Fundamentals and Applications. High School Agriculture students taking the new Agribusiness/Finance course will receive dual credit for ABAS 1201. We will explore how MTSU is paving the way for new dual credit programs and discuss the promising outlook of this initiative. The program will also introduce the new testing feature now available for dual credit students using Desire to Learn (D2L). These challenges directly impact students school attendance, placement and achievement. DCS Education Specialists will discuss issues related to educating students in foster care and suggest some ways that DCS and local school systems can work together to provide positive outcomes for this at-risk population. The teacher, as the professional, is basically responsible for facilitating communication from the start of the school year until the student is no longer in his/her care. {MTKT0910FA-14} Memories to Last: Observing Monuments [John Mckay, Park Ranger/Education Coordinator, Stones River National Battlefield] Monuments can be a wonderful tool for teaching social studies, language arts and other subjects. This program will review the reasons for building monuments and the importance of monument location, using the Hazen Brigade Monument at Stones River National Battlefield as an example. Lesson plans will be presented that help students understand the concept of commemoration, learn the difference between observation and inference, understand time capsules and artifacts, and appreciate what is being remembered and honored.
